As part of our Year 6 Life Skills Week, we discussed and presented our idea of the perfect school trip. Part of this project was researching the necessity of risk assessments. Mrs Britten, our Business Manager, came to see us and explained what you do to create an assessment. The steps involved:
Step 1: Identify the hazards
Step 2: Decide who might be harmed and how
Step 3: Evaluate the risks and decide on control measures
Step 4: Record your findings
Step 5: Review your assessment
Risk – Mrs Britten helped us to understand the difference between a risk and a hazard – she showed us a picture of a lion which is a hazard. If a person is introduced into the picture, it becomes a risk.
She showed us a chart to explain different types of risk:
And we discussed how you used it.
We then used the Rowan template sheet to make our own risk assessments for the trips we have been planning.
