At Rowan Preparatory School, our academic programme inspires and develops your child fully through a breadth of engaging experiences and subjects. We aim to nurture curious minds and help each child achieve the results that will carry them into the next stage of their lives as they transition into secondary education.
Academics: The curriculum
Our independently developed prep school curriculum is curated with the aim of helping each pupil thrive, built on the foundation that every child flourishes when they find what motivates them. Through an ever-evolving academic programme, our pupils learn necessary skills and embrace challenges to give them the skills they'll need beyond education.
Early years (Preschool to Year 2)
Preschool at Rowan Brae: Our creative, hands-on ethos encourages girls to discover, question, and explore. Outdoor learning plays a key role, with weekly visits to our 23-acre woodland for enriching activities. Our curriculum is focussed on fostering a joy for learning through creative, hands-on experiences.
Reception: An environment where your daughter’s learning will flourish through a balanced curriculum. Their abilities and talents are identified and developed through carefully planned, differentiated tasks, encouraging your daughter to become a self-motivated learner and confident communicator.
Years 1 and 2: As your daughter enters Key Stage 1, our curriculum broadens, becoming more balanced and personalised to begin fostering a love of learning. Focus on traditional academic subjects from English to Maths begins, while weekly philosophy lessons build analytical skills and promote understanding and respect for differences.
Transition to Rowan Hill (Years 3 and 4)
Girls move up to Rowan Hill to begin Key Stage 2. They enjoy specialist teaching alongside form-based learning in a nurturing environment.
Our small class sizes and teaching enable us to extend far beyond the National Curriculum, ensuring differentiation, support, stretch and challenge for every girl.
Dedicated spaces, such as the Engineering and Technology workshop, inspire creativity and problem-solving, from designing inventions with 3D printers to building and testing kit cars and exploring the world using VR headsets.
Preparing for the future (Years 5 and 6)
As they continue into their senior years at Rowan Hill, our curriculum focuses on independent thinking, learning new skills, and developing initiative to prepare girls for senior school. Throughout Year 6, academic focus is on English, maths and reasoning, with girls consolidating their learning in lessons and partaking in a series of online and practice papers.
Expert guidance ensures a smooth transition into leavers' destination schools, with every Year 6 girl working to secure a place at her chosen school. Many achieve scholarships at prestigious institutions.
