On Wednesday, the girls were treated to a wonderful morning of classical music at Guildford’s superb G-Live theatre. They attended the Southern Pro Musica Children’s Orchestral Concert, conducted by the marvellous Jonathan Willcocks. Year 4 joined many other local junior schools in a packed auditorium, and were taken on a musical journey from Strauss’s ‘Die Fledermaus’ overture, through Rameau’s ‘Dance of the Savages’ and into Albinoni’s ‘Concerto in D minor’. They marvelled at the magic performed by Neil Henry, one of the country’s top magicians, who narrated ‘ The Theatre Ghost’ and introduced the children to a feast of orchestral instruments. The girls loved the insight into percussion in the memorable piece, ‘The Syncopated Clock’, and danced along to Offenbach’s ‘Can Can’. Strauss’s ‘Radetsky’s March was a toe tapping end to a lively concert.
We hope the experience has inspired our instrumentalists to keep practising, and perhaps opened the door to many on the joys of listening to live classical music.
