Year 6 travelled to London to see the West End musical sensation, ‘Wicked’. It was a greatly anticipated trip and the girls were very keen to get inspiration for their own Summer production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’. The Guardian best describes the musical as ‘Packed with wit, storming songs and beautiful costumes’, and we were certainly blown away by the afternoon’s spectacle. It is the 9th longest running musical in London Theatre history, but however many times you see this classic musical, there are always elements of surprise and wonder. The girls particularly enjoyed the show’s further exploration of the now familiar beloved characters from ‘The Wizard of Oz’, and the story behind the two university friends on their journey to becoming Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The musical and their own production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ have certainly thrown up many ideas for Year 6 class discussion, such as fate and freewill, and the concept of good vs evil. The girls are now busy learning their parts and songs, and creating versions of Frank Baum’s characters for their show on Thursday 13 June.
