Preschool

Our Preschool is perfect for children between the ages of two and four who are taking their first steps away from home.

Located in a purpose-built setting with lots of outdoor space and excellent facilities, our Preschool provides a nurturing environment with all the benefits of our outstanding pre-prep.

We like to think of our Preschool as the start of the Rowan journey for girls and we hope that you will want your daughter to progress through to our Reception class to experience the exceptional educational experience that Rowan has to offer.

The teaching ethos in our Preschool and Reception classes is creative, exciting, varied and hands-on. The girls are encouraged to discover, question and relish their learning in order to gain a solid foundation in every area of learning and become independent pupils.

Our imaginative and colourful classrooms offer a wide range of exciting learning areas including a dedicated story and role-play corner, literacy and numeracy zones, an IT section and areas for investigative and imaginative challenges.

Preschool teachers observe, nurture, extend and develop the girls in an exciting, imaginative and caring environment.  This enables teachers to prepare a detailed profile of each child which forms the basis of their future learning. In addition to the Preschool teachers, we have specialised teachers who teach music, dance, drama, French, gym, yoga and games to the girls.

In our stimulating outdoor learning environment, the girls enjoy exploring the sandpit, the grassy garden, adventure climbing apparatus and water and role-play areas. There is a hard surface for riding bikes, a playhouse and covered space for painting and water-based activities.

In addition, we have access to our Forest School site located within the woodland area at Telegraph Hill and the girls enjoy embracing outdoor learning during their weekly Forest School sessions in this wonderful environment.

Each week our Preschool girls engage in a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics activities that encourage problem solving, learning by trial and error, resilience and investigative skills. Each activity is designed to provoke thought and create links in learning and development.

STEM

Construction activities develop engineering minds, they impact positively on thinking skills, spatial reasoning, coordination and both fine and gross motor control. We use a range of technologies including Polydrons, Duplo, Grippies and Octagons to engage our young learners.

CONSTRUCTION & ENGINEERING

Each week our Preschool girls take part in a cooking activity which will support exploration of new foods, social skills and mathematical understanding.

COOKING

Our messy play activities are multisensory and promote language, curiosity and exploration as well as developing fundamental early writing skills and finger dexterity. The girls have regular access to playdough, putty, foam, kinetic sand and many more malleable resources.

MESSY PLAY

As well as a weekly Forest School session, our girls have the opportunity to regularly explore our Preschool garden. This promotes physical development through large construction, water and sand play and use of sports equipment such as obstacle courses, balancing boards, balls and stepping stones.

OUTDOOR LEARNING

In Preschool, our girls begin our Phonics and Mathematics education programmes with our specialist early years teachers, who also have specialist input into their physical development in our Get Active sports sessions. Girls will learn a love of languages with our French teacher in Little Linguists; gain musical skills, many of which support early reading, in Music and Movement; develop confidence in Dramarama; and learn coordination in our Twinkle Toes Dance lesson. Our girls gain excitement and enjoyment of books in our Library session and build resilience and care for the environment at Forest School.
