With much excitement and anticipation, Year 6 put on two spectacular performances of ‘The Wizard of Oz’, marking their final term at Rowan and demonstrating a wealth of musical and dramatic talent that they will take with them to their new schools. Like Dorothy Gale of Kansas, our girls have big dreams of what may lie over the rainbow, but this journey was to take us far away to another world. We joined the Scarecrow, the Tinman and the Cowardly Lion, as they set off with Dorothy and Toto into an imaginary land where Munchkins urged our friends to seek help from the Wizard of Oz. As we travelled through the Haunted Forest filled with singing and dancing Jitterbugs, we watched them all collapse from exhaustion. We were relieved at the arrival of the Merry Old Land of Oz, and cheered as they bravely made it through to the land of the Winkies. Terrifying performances from the Wicked Witch had us rooted to our seats, especially with the appearance of the Winged Monkeys whose realistic dance moves had us very concerned for the welfare of our friends. When Glinda finally came to the rescue, we all agreed ‘there’s no place at home’ and sat back to enjoy the beautiful song ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’.
The girls worked brilliantly as a year group, and their own interpretation of the story was certainly helped by their theatre trip to ‘Wicked’ and the professional drama workshop at the National Theatre.
