Rowan celebrated Christmas together with friends and family at two festive church services held at Holy Trinity, Claygate on Monday 11 December.
The morning and evening were equally as cold and frosty, although we seemed to have escaped the snow! We arrived to a beautiful church, creatively decorated by a group of parents and staff, to the theme of Wassail! with dried citrus fruits, hessian bows and green ivy. The readings were rich with connotations of Christmas times gone by, with poems by Henry Wodsworth Longfellow and Dylan Thomas, as well as traditional Christmas bible stories. The Sussex Carol was performed by the Senior Chamber Choir and an enthusiastic group of parents and staff who enjoyed early morning rehearsals with the girls in the lead up to the day. The lighter side of Christmas shone through in the Year 6 song ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ and ‘Jingle Bells’, sang with joy and a wonderful sense of humour.
We were lucky enough to have Mr Adams accompany some of the more thought provoking Carols on his ‘cello, such as the magical ‘All Through the Night’ and traditional congregational Carols. We were also very grateful to Mr Hope for his superb piano and organ accompaniment.
The girls and staff at Rowan wish all our friends and families a very merry Christmas, and happy Wassailing!
